Earrings sparkling in the sunshine

“Selene and Helios”

Making a piece with this diamond I wanted to explore mythology of the sky. Selene is the Greek Goddess of the moon, noted as a personification of the moon itself. Depicted as early as the 5th Century BC, she wore a crescent shaped diadem. At dusk, Selene would pull the moon across the sky, in a chariot led by two ‘snow-white’ horses, chasing her brother Helios, God of the Sun. Selene, holding feminine energy, symbolised the cycles of time, as well as being linked to witchcraft.

In July I took part in New Designers Selects, where I was awarded the Stephen Webster “Jewellery Designer of the Year Award”, winning a mentorship with Stephen Webster, as well as a one carat Skydiamond. Skydiamond are a sustainable lab-grown diamond company, taking carbon from the sky, and using 100% renewable energy to grow their diamonds.

On the right ear, the East, the Skydiamond represents the moon, Selene, with her crescent diadem, her horses playing in the sky as the moon rises.

On the left ear, the West, you have Helios depicted as a sun. Carved and cast in recycled 9kt yellow gold, the sun’s rays spread fluidly across the ear, as though hazily setting on the horizon.
